The Dress: An Accidental Kick-ass Example of an Illusion

Original Photo Posted by Swiker
Seriously … our world err… internet, has gone bat shit cray cray over this {Roman Originals} dress.  It’s either Blue and Black, White and Gold, or Who f’ing cares.

I love the people posting the pictures of how they don’t give a shit.  Maybe I don’t have anything else exciting going on in my life, but I have learned SO much from this ‘debate’.  It’s not about a picture gone viral.  It’s about how different people’s perceptions can be and I find that to be extremely fascinating!  And I don’t see how people can’t care about learning something new.

At first I thought maybe it was the lighting in the room.  So my husband and I pulled our two boys (7 and 4) in the room to look at the exact same screen at the exact same time. The 7yo saw an orange and white dress.  The 4yo, a black and blue dress.  I saw the same as the 4yo while my husband sees a gold and white dress.

Dirt Don't Hurt - In Moderation

The never-ending battle to keep my house clean is no joke.  I raise boys – it’s borderline impossible. The walls always need wiped, the floors always need mopped, and the toilets always need scrubbed. Like most moms I know, I try to keep my house free from germs.  But there are many days when I just can’t keep up. Sometimes you just have to let the germs win.

Let’s face it … children are tiny, disgusting, walking, cesspools of microorganisms.

When both of my boys were really small, I worked diligently to keep the germs away.
I never let them eat the dropped goldfish off the stadium bleachers.  We washed our hands like it was an Olympic sport.  And if anybody tried to touch my kid’s binkies or face or ANYthing … I pulled out my martial arts moves quicker than kung fu panda.

No shits given.

It always amazes me the difference between my two boys.

But what freaks me out the most is not how I managed to create two little Arian boys, but how the oldest ended up looking so much like the blonde version of his dad, and how the youngest looks so much like me … but with the opposite personalities.

Cash (the big one) could not be any more like me if he tried.  He is overly emotional, shy, dramatic, and sweet. Oh, and a great dancer (but we’re talking personalities here, right?)  He’s a people pleaser and a rule follower.  He can’t stand that he might be in trouble and he’s easy to discipline – mainly because the slightest scolding can turn into the world’s biggest meltdown. He wants everyone to like him and people like to be around him.

With my little Christopher though … {I’ll put this nonchalantly}

What do non-parents do at night?

As I sit here scrubbing pots and pans, picking up toys, running baths, defusing a temper tantrum, folding laundry, breaking up a fight, checking homework folders, picking out tomorrow’s clothes, and eventually sinking down in my favorite spot on the couch with a glass of wine {only to hear “mommmmmmmmyyyy” three minutes later} … I often wonder:

What do people who don’t have children do with their evenings?

My best friend is kidless.  She lives in her cutesy little duplex three minutes from the California coast and a short car ride to LAX.  Yes, Crys … I’m referring to you.

Here’s how our convo’s go, usually:

Two Kids is Plenty Perfect. For me!

Some days I wish we had more kids.  And before you start in with the, “you’re still young” shit, I already know this.  It’s not that I feel like I’m too old to have more children. Nor is my husband (even he thinks he is).  I thought it was going to be extremely hard this last year to cool down the baby fever.  We had a LOT of friends and people around us having babies.  And oh my GOD, they are all the cutest little spawn I’ve ever seen in my entire life.  Not to mention our own boys saying they want a little sister but would settle for a little brother.

I thought my ovaries were never going to stop fluttering.

FREE Coffee in February at Chick-fil-A -- Whaaaaa??!!??

My {once} favorite furry little friend saw his shadow this morning portending six more weeks of this BRUTALLY frigid winter.
Shadow or no shadow … it’s flippin’ cold outside and FREE coffee is in the forecast at Chick-fil-A!

Regardless of Punxsutawney Phil’s forecast about the duration of winter, Chick-fil-A’s customers can wake up Monday morning to free coffee!  For the entire month of February, Chick-fil-A restaurants nationwide will give customers free cups of its new specialty-grade THRIVE Farmers™ hot or iced coffee all day long (or at least as long as their cups last).
