Christmas City of the High Plains

November 28-January 4

Wakeeney, KS
Since 1950, WaKeeney has been known as "the Christmas City of the High Plains". This holiday wonderland along the Smoky Valley Scenic Byway features a 35-ft tree of fresh pine greenery located in the center of downtown. The 4-sq block area around the tree is decorated with more fresh greenery and garlands, handcrafted ornaments, and thousands of lights. It is considered the largest Christmas display between Kansas City & Denver.

The Five Places of Christmas

The Five Places of Christmas will highlight the holiday at multiple locations in Newton and North Newton from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 5. All five attractions will offer free admission during the one-day event. Participating organizations are the Warkentin House, Harvey County Historical Museum and Carriage Factory Art Gallery in Newton and Kauffman Museum and the Bethel College Women's Association in North Newton. The Bethel women's group will be set up in the Luyken Fine Arts Center on the college's campus.

Possessions of the World's 1st Daredevil is Coming to Kansas!

If you haven’t heard of Evil Knievel, I’d ask what rock you’ve been living under!

Evel Knievel was an American daredevil who became an icon in the 1970s for his incredible motorcycle stunts.  In his career, he attempted more than 75 ramp-to-ramp motorcycle jumps between 1965 and 1980; and, in 1974, a canyon jump across Snake River Canyon (which failed) in the Skycycle X-2, a steam-powered rocket.  He suffered more than 433 bone fractures in his career, thereby earning an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records as the survivor of "most bones broken in a lifetime" {Wikipedia}

In early summer 2016, a traveling exhibit of the possessions of the world’s first daredevil will make its final landing in Topeka, Kan.  How exciting is THAT for the Sunflower State?!

Dear Cashier-

Dear Derby (KS) Dillon’s Cashier-

First of all, I’ll start out by saying that I hope that your night got better after I left.  I know that me having a cart full of groceries and you being the only cashier in the front lane when I pulled up must’ve looked impossible that you would ever get through it.  But you did!  And today is a new day!!

You see, I knew that when I went shopping at 9:00 last night that the store would be slow and that I’d (for once) have plenty of time to think about everything I was going to get and that I could take my sweet time and enjoy it alone. And boy did I.

If you don’t have children, some day, when you do, you will realize that going grocery shopping – sans your brood – will be comparable to a luxury vacation!

I will also tell you that, even if you have the most well behaved children, sometimes … you just need some time alone.  Trust me, I would know!  I have GREAT kiddos.  They don’t ask for anything and if they do, they don’t cry when I say no.  They don’t touch everything in sight and they’re not loud or over-talkative.  They put their tiny little hands on the sides of the cart and they help me when I need it.  I’ve received compliments on how good my children are.  They rock the supermarket!

So why would I not take them with me and go during the day when there are more cashiers?

Well, we went to a movie earlier that afternoon and pigged out a little too much.  The oldest was not feeling well and the youngest had diarrhea. And because my husband was on-call for work until 9pm, I had to stay home and take care of them in case he was called in.

So why wouldn’t I wait until Sunday when again, there are more cashiers?

We do church Sunday morning.  Sunday’s are our family days since we can guarantee that dad won’t be on-call. The last thing we want to do are chores.  And anymore, grocery shopping is a chore.  It takes time away from our family time and that’s frustrating.  But I will say this, Dillon’s always seems to make that chore a little less painful.

Unlike Wal-Mart, I’ve always found the Dillon’s employees to be kind and helpful.  My husband and I were just talking about this a couple days ago.  We live in Rose Hill so we have the choice to either go to the Dillon’s in Andover or the Dillon’s in Derby.  And regardless of which one I choose to go to that day, the staff is always polite and obliging.  But at the Wal-Mart supercenters {primarily the Derby Wal-Mart}, I feel as if I’m a nuisance.  The store is dirty and the shelves are never stocked.
So when I say that going grocery shopping at Dillon’s – sans my brood – is like a luxurious vacation, it truly is.

Until last night.

Last night, when I started unloading my groceries on the belt, you had another Dillon’s employee checking out.  She was buying a pie and it wasn’t ringing up right.  Which is to be expected on specialty sale items.  I get it.  I worked retail for five years as my first job.

I also get that when you see somebody pull up in your lane with a LOADED cart and you’re the only cashier, it can seem overwhelming.  But as you found out, you have some very helpful coworkers – and customers.

Once you were able to get the price adjusted on the pie and that associate finished with, it came time for me – that annoying customer who just made you work for your paycheck.

I’m sorry if that sounded brash.  But that’s exactly how you made it seem.  You never once said hello to me.  It wasn’t until you were nearly finished ringing through my items that I started to realize that maybe YOU were the one that needed the hello first.  So I said it.  I mean, after all, I was the one doing chores as I stated above.

The more you stood quiet and the more I realized that you were making it known that you were annoyed with my abundance of groceries – because of the way you were throwing them to the end of your counter towards the bags – the more I realized that maybe YOU needed me to ask you how your night was.  So I did.  In which you merely turned your head towards another associate to tell them to “cancel” something.  Maybe it was to bag my groceries, because you realized that I wasn’t just somebody that was going to stand there and stare as the line grew when I am fully capable of bagging my own groceries to help speed up the process. Again, it's the whole "chore" thing that I have my mind set on.

Anyway, I never did find out how your night was.  But by the way it looked, it was not going well.  You were young, cute and it was 10:12 on a Saturday night.  Remember, I was young and in retail once too. And also cute.  But that’s beside the point.

But those five years in retail taught me more life experience than any of my other careers combined!

I learned that, regardless of how crappy my day had been, there would always be someone who is having it worse than me.
And maybe that person will be one of my customers.  Early on in retail, I learned that my smiling face and friendly hello may be the ONLY smiling face and friendly hello that my customers receive that day.

I think about my friend, Amber when I say this.  She has four young girls at home.  Her brother lives in Colorado and her husband is an accountant.  She is a stay-at-home mom and lots of times, the first adult interaction of the day may be the cashier at the register when she goes to the store.

Amber’s mom is extremely ill.  She is in critical care in the hospital and is not doing well at all.
During the day, Amber stays at home with her girls, which helps keep her mind off of things.  When her husband gets home, she goes to the hospital to see her mom, optimistic that things will turn around, but still no answers as to when.
Afterwards, she may stop by the grocery store and stock up because this may be the only night she has to go.  Again, her family size is six.  So while I was refilling for two weeks, only half of a week’s worth of groceries would fill her cart.

So I thought about my friend last night after leaving your store.  If it were she instead of me last night, Amber had one last chance before going to bed to have somebody smile and say hello to her and you would’ve blown that for her.  And she's the last person that would have deserved that sort of treatment.  She would’ve been made to feel like SHE was the nuisance instead of me.  And that bothers me so much because Amber would do anything for anyone at any moment.  So in a way, I’m so glad it was me that annoyed you and not her. All I did that day was wipe hiney's and rub upset tummy's.  Pish posh.

I apologize if your night was actually going just fine and maybe I’m just blowing this all out of proportion.  But do you honestly think that I’d take the time away from my family to write a 1,300-word blog post for nothing?

I’m writing this in hopes that maybe I can help open your eyes.  Maybe you’re new and haven’t had the experience long enough to realize that sure, there are some customers who can be real assholes or some that just don’t feel like talking.  But there are also those customers out there that really need to see your beautiful smile or hear your friendly hello.  You can usually tell who is who --- if you would just take one second to look up, smile and say hi.  I promise, I would have been that customer to smile and say hello back.  Because I need it just as much as you do.


PS – I would’ve much rather have been told to 'have a good night', than how many fuel points I have.  But maybe that would’ve taken up too much of your time?  Regardless, I hope that your night got better after I left.

An Open Letter to my Husband on our 9th Anniversary

My dearest CT-

Today we celebrate our 9^th wedding anniversary.

It’d be easy to write a mushy gushy love letter to you.  But I’m not.  It’s not who I am and it’s definitely not what our marriage is.

Fourteen years ago, I thought I struck gold when you told me you were single and ready to mingle and wanted to know when I was going to go out with you.  Seriously.  That’s what you said.  Word-for-word.  Our beginning wasn’t necessarily the most romantic, but it’s our story, and it’s my favorite.

Fourteen years ago, time stood still every time you looked at me.  You treated me like my Dad always said I deserved to be treated.  You opened doors for me, you made sure I was safe, and you took care of me. Whenever we were together, it was like nothing else existed. The world stood still.  I’ll never forget the day you first took my hand in yours.  I told myself I’d never let go.  And I haven’t.

I was young … ohhh so young when we met.  I had a lot of growing up to do and you never once held me back.  You let me grow.  You let me listen to my shitty music, you put up with my idiotic friends and roommates, and you dealt with my immature drama that I created for myself.  I’m not the same person that I was fourteen years ago and you aren’t either.  But we’ve grown together and accepted one another along the way. We’ve had many years of growing up, but never once grew apart. I can't promise I won't listen to more shitty music. But I can promise to buy you earplugs.

As life went on, we stumbled our way through it.  We were poor.  SO very poor.  We have been misunderstood and swept under MANY of doormats.  But we were unbreakable and inseparable.

To say we’ve been happy is an understatement, at best.

We’ve had breakable moments.  Unspeakable moments.  Moments that are so dark that they’re MEANT to tear a couple apart.  I fought what I thought was a losing battle. And I’m sure you felt like you were doing the same.

You could have let go.  But you didn’t.

Deep down, beneath the fragility and the ambiguity, you loved me more than anything else in the world. And I you.

Experience has taught me that there will be more storms … more darkness … and more arguments.  We’ll get sick. We’ll have more financial worries. We’ll have more flooded rooms. We’ll have other distractions. We’ll worry about our boys and their children and their children. Death will make an entrance. We’ll lose parents, family and posterity.  As much as I hate to think about it, I really hope that we leave this life relatively close to one another… but in all honesty, I hope that I go first. As selfish as it sounds, I can’t stand the thought of being without you.  Yes, we’ve been through some breakable things and we’ll go through some more breakable things.  But experience has also taught me that together, we make each other better. And we can weather these rough waters that lie ahead. Just take my hand and trust me. And I promise that I'll give you the same trust.

I don’t say this often enough, Cale…  But I love being your wife.  I’m proud to be your wife. You continue to selflessly love me year after year.  You’d do anything for me.  You have supported me through dead-end jobs, ever-changing degree changes, and silly shenanigans that nobody else would put up with.

You’re the “you can” when I want to give up.  You’re the “so quit” when I’m unhappy. You’re the “you will” when I can’t see the light.  You’re my rock. You have supported my writing, my photography, my passions, and my ventures.

I would not be here, continuing to chase dreams, if it weren’t for you..

I know that I’m not the perfect wife to you and mother to our boys.  All I can promise is that I will try to continue to be the best that I know how to be.

We may not have a single thing in common {besides traveling and that other thing}, but saying, “I do” to you {nine years ago today} was the best decision I’ve ever made.

True love is more than bouquets and romance.  It’s about weathering the storms.  It’s about conquering the roughest of rides.  It’s about learning from your mistakes and loving each other unconditionally.

On the 1,387^th day from the day we started dating, you asked me to marry you.

On the 1,911^th day from the day we started dating, you made me your wife.

On the 2,432^nd day from the day we started dating, you made me a mommy.

And on this 5,198^th day from the day we started dating, you continue to make me the happiest girl in the world.

Thank you for continuing to sweep me off my feet and making my knees a little weak.  Thank you for picking me up when I’ve fallen and making me laugh when I can't stand you.

Thank you for spending fourteen of your precious years with me as my best friend with nine of those as my husband. 

Even as my memories fade and as the moments of my younger life seem farther behind me… I promise to never forget that day nine years ago…  Our wedding day.  May we always let our love bring us back to that day that we made our promise to each other to be together for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, till death do us part.  I said it then, and I’d say it all over again.  I {still} do.

I love you from the deepest depth of my heart.  I love our perfectly imperfect marriage.

Stop with the Mom vs Mom

I had a very unnerving comment made towards me. So I feel obligated to address it. And what better place than on social media where the comment originated...

Someone sent me a message that read, "…but don’t you feel that the most important job you can have is to raise your child?  Don't you hate that somebody else is raising him?"

First off – screw you.  People like you are the ones who widen the rift between stay-at-home moms and working mothers.

I agree that the most important job you can have is to raise your children. When you brought your child into this world, from that point on, it was made your responsibility to raise and teach your child good and bad. I will not argue that at all. But just because I cart my sons off to daycare everyday does not mean I am not raising them. If my children misbehave, that’s all on me.  Same as when my child is well-behaved.

Did you know that 3 out of every 4 tornadoes touch down right here in the United States? You could probably guess that. But do you know which state has the most? Many would say it was one of the states in tornado alley.  But that's actually wrong.  It’s Florida.  Florida is the thunderstorm capital of the world.  The tornadoes spawned in Florida usually don’t reach the width of a tornado that happen to occur in tornado alley, but on average, they receive the most with 12.3 tornadoes per 10,000 miles.

Creative Tips & Tricks for Leftover Candle Wax

 

It’s always hard to see the leftover wax sitting at the bottom of your favorite candle unused and untouched. Especially when there is still fragrance in the unburned portion.  So what do you do?  Do you throw out the candle and open up a new one?  Or do you re-purpose and reuse that perfectly good candle wax?

Reusing candle wax is incredibly easy!  Here are a few ways that you can re-purpose the wax and save your sanity (and pocketbook):

DIY #DisneySide Cars-Themed Party {an @Home Celebration}

We were chosen to host a #DisneySide Cars-themed Party. All opinions are my own!

My family was recently chosen to host a #DisneySide @Home Celebration, and my boys could not be any more excited!  We received a big box full of Cars themed party decorations and goodies, so we invited a few friends over for a Cars get-together. We’re always eager to host a party, even if the only excuse to party is simply showing off our #DisneySide!

Our local party store had some Cars favor on sale so we picked up a few trinkets to add to our party.

Here are some of the things we built...

Sally’s Cozy Cones 
We bought a bag of regular flavor bugles and had sides of ranch and salsa for the kids to dip them in.  {Inspiration:  The Cozy Cone - Sally’s hotel}

Luigi’s Casa Della Tires 
The boys wanted to build a “Luigi’s Casa Della Tires,” so we used mini chocolate donuts to create a “tire” tower. It was SUPER simple!  I simply hot glued a chopstick from our local Chinese restaurant to a paper plate, and then stacked the donuts on to the skewer.  It was almost too cute to eat!  And it must’ve been.  Because as you can see in the picture – I had to use a blue balloon stick instead as somebody confiscated the chopstick.  We found the culprit.  My son decided he wanted to play with the bugles with it.  But anyway.  Either one worked!  {Inspiration: Luigi’s Casa Della Tires store}

 

Mater’s Tow Cables 
Who doesn’t love red licorice!?  And the fact that it had to do with Mater, made them taste all that much better!  {Inspiration: Mater the tow truck}

 
Dinoco DipSticks
Dinoco is the oil company from the movie.  So what better way to try to throw in some healthy options at a party than to come up with a cute name for it!  And if you’re a super Disney freak, like me, you may remember it being the same gas station that Andy chose Buzz to go to Pizza Planet with him at.  {Inspiration: Dinoco Oil Company & Gas Station}

Ka-Chow Sandwiches 
We had to have some lunch besides just the finger foods so a cheaper option I chose were sandwiches.  I grabbed some day-old rolls, lunchmeat and had the usual sandwich toppings (cheese, mayo, lettuce, pickles, etc) all on the side so our guests could create their own sandwich. Plus I thought the word “chow” in Ka-Chow would be super fun!  {Inspiration: Lightning McQueen’s favorite saying}

Other ideas we had at our party… 

This was a brand new gas can.  Make sure you if you use this idea, you talk to the kids about the dangers of gasoline!!

All in all we had an awesome day hanging out and playing with all of the Cars toys and games. The kids loved showing their #DisneySide – which made this Disney-obsessed Mama SUPER happy!
