Bash and the Pirate Pig BOOK REVIEW

While my son is only five … he has been into chapter books since he was four. It started with a scooby doo book and ever since then, he’s been a chapter book kind of kid. Obviously he’s just learning to read so obviously I am the reader of these books so, in all honest, the chapter books we read together have to keep me entertained as well! But we love reading the books and then using our imaginations as to what the characters look like, what they’re doing, etc.

So when BH Publishing contacted me about reviewing their newest chapter book, Bash and the Pirate Pig by Burton Cole … the name alone had us hurrying up to finish our current read.

Written for boys 8 to 14, Bash and the Pirate Pig is the story of a cranky city kid named Raymond "Beamer" Boxby who must spend summer vacation at his younger cousin Bash Hinglehobb’s farm. Beamer prefers air conditioning and video games. He can’t see what good can come of this so-called country fun that includes riding cows, river rafting with a pig, or playing with skunks.
But hang tight, Beamer, because Bash’s zany adventures with his "Fishin' and Farmin' book" (The Bible) just might lead to the coolest Discovery of all.

We LOVED this book. But you don’t really care about mom’s take on it. You want to hear straight from a kiddo, right? Well this is what my five year old had to say...
  • "Can we stay up just a little bit longer and ready about Bash? Pleeeeeeeease?"
  • "Hey Mom, if we ever get a pig … I’m going to dress him up like a pirate for Halloween and then I can be Bash!"
  • "Are they going to make anymore of these books?"
  • I’ll admit … I wonder the same thing. And if they do … we’ll make sure to pick up the next copy!
About the Author
Burton Cole is a Pulitzer Prize nominated journalist with thirty years of experience and more than fifty humor writing awards to his credit. He grew up on a farm in northeast Ohio and attended a smalltown church with a slew of cousins and buddies. That sameboyhood inspires his colorful stories today.

About the Illustrator
Tom Bancroft has more than twenty years of experience in the animation and illustration industry and worked with Disney on films including Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Aladdin. Other clients have included DC Comics and Big Idea Productions.

Note to Parents: There are some words in the book that some may cringe at. Lucky for me, I could change the word "stupid" to "silly" as I was reading it and my son didn’t have a clue.
But then you have to pay attention to the message of the book as well. While the language may be geared towards older children, any child of any age can take something away from this book. It’s a Christian story and contains Bible scriptures throughout the story.
Also, there’s a great parent/child connection inclusion in the book that everyone can participate in.

You can purchase the hardcover edition of Bash and the Pirate pig on BH Publishing’s website for only $12.99.

I hope you and your children enjoy this book as much as we did!

Disclaimer: BH Publishing let me have a copy of Bash and the Pirate Pig for review purposes. This in no way reflected how myself (or my son) felt about the story. As always, The Procrastinating Mommy (and her family) cannot be bought!
